A full Fruitville block clears a big hurdle
Plus a school board runoff, a UTC closing, and the Shipyard's return
Late August usually runs quiet here. This week it did not, and most of it happened within a few blocks of each other downtown.
Bristol Development Group’s plan for 1899 Fruitville Road covers 3.44 acres between Gillespie and North Osprey avenues. The 324-unit apartment building would replace a bungalow village of small businesses and include 36 attainable units.
The Sarasota Planning Board unanimously approved two code adjustments this week. The project still needs administrative approval, but this is a real step forward.
Few downtown proposals replace a whole block of small storefronts at once. If you shop or eat in those bungalows, this is the change to follow.
A building that size changes a street fast. It changes parking demand, sidewalk traffic, and who is out on Fruitville at night. There is still process ahead before anything comes down.
Jpan is closing at UTC, but not leaving
Jpan Sushi & Grill will close its 229 N. Cattlemen Road restaurant after September 13, ending a 10-year run at that address. Owner Daniel Dokko says the business is working with UTC owner Benderson Development to find another space nearby.
The move is not finalized yet. In the meantime, Jpan’s Siesta Row location at 3800 S. Tamiami Trail remains open.
If the UTC restaurant is one of your regular stops, September 13 is the last scheduled day at the current storefront.
The parking open house made things worse
The city set out to ease months of frustration over parking. The open house did the opposite.
Residents booed and shouted. Several said they had been misled about how the meeting would run. The format included no public comment period, and that became the main grievance of the night.
Parking has been the loudest downtown argument of the summer. What changed this week is the target. The anger is now about process as much as price.
If you plan to weigh in the next time around, ask about the format first. That question is not going away.
Glover and Brandt head to a District 1 runoff
Sarasota County School Board District 1 is headed to a November 3 runoff after no candidate won more than 50% in the primary. Jimmy Glover, who led the primary field, will face Heidi Brandt.
The race is nonpartisan, though WFLA reports Glover is backed by Democrats and Brandt by Republicans. The winner will replace Bridget Ziegler, one of three conservatives who did not seek reelection.
The result will help set the board’s new political balance, making this the county school race to track on the fall ballot.
